My Beauty Diary Arbutin Whitening Mask Review

My Beauty Diary's Arbutin Whitening Mask has probably been the most effective mask in terms of brightening & reducing redness that I've tried so far, as well as being quite moisturizing. Read on to find out how I feel about it in detail ~

Where to buy:
prettyandcute.com 1 Mask- $2.00 / 10 Masks - $15.75
sasa.com 1 mask- $1.50 / 10 Masks - $13.60
bonjourhk.com 10 Masks - $14.00

Description: Popular whitening ingredient, Arbutin, is mild and comes from the uva ursi plant extract of vaccinium genus. This ingredient has superior effects in purifying, whitening and brightening, and building a protective barrier that resists melanin. Moreover, Arbutin breaks down melanin beneath the stratum corneum, allowing skin to be whiter, and more radiant for a flawless and even-toned look, whilst establishing an efficient melanin-free system! Mori folium and prunus x yedoensis (type of Japanese cherry blossom) extracts are combined with the excellent anti-melanin function of flavones to improve uneven skin tone, and rejuvenate the skin to a translucent glow. The fruit enzyme of pineapples and polyphenol protection of apples gently metabolizes dead skin cells, boosts skin fineness and translucency, thus defending the whiteness of skin to provide a flawless and vibrant translucent luminosity! Claims to
~ whiten
~ brighten
~ 'illuminate'
~ moisturize
~ make skin 'translucent' (what does that even mean?)

Ingredients: water, butylene glcol, glycerin, propylene glycol, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, phenoxyethanol, citrus grandis (grapefruit) fruit extract, sodium hyaluronate, cucumis sativus (cucumber) fruit extract, morus alba lead extract, ananas satmus (pineapple) fruit extract, laminaria digitata extract, soluble collagen, lecithin, chlorphenesin aurantifolia (lime) fruit extract, dimethysilanol, hyaluronate, styrene/acrylates copolymer, panax ginseng root extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, citric acid, prunus yedoensis leaf extract, polysorbate 20, carbomer, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, xantham gum, frangrance, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide

I couldn't find the ingredients online, so I typed them up MYSELF! I'm such a dedicated blogger. Appreciate me.

Scent:
The scent is kind of weird- it's like a perfume/cologne that I recognize but can't put a finger on what it is exactly. It kind of reminds me of some men's cologne I've smelled before... regardless, I like it! It's just not quite what I'd expect from a sheet mask, and fairly strong. If you're sensitive to smells you might want to stay away from this one :(

Packaging: Probably my least favorite of the MBD masks I've tried, just because it's hard to photograph! >:( The shiny silver accents on the light pink background can be hard to see/make it hard to read the fine print on the back, which was annoying when typing out the ingredients. I do like the pink color, but it's not a particularly cute packaging soo, yea. Not that it really matters though, haha.

Fit: Same ooollddd, same old. Just copying + pasting what I wrote in my last review. 'They are too wide and too long to fit my face, the area between the mouth and nose is about double the size it needs to be, and the nose area is designed for a much shallower nose bridge than mine. However, due to the mask being quite thin, you can make small tears to adjust it easily. This at least helps the poor fit! See here for more info.'

Results: I'm very happy with how effective this mask was. It definitely reduced redness and brightened my complexion overall. The full results last for over a day- the day after I'm constantly admiring how much more even my skin looks lol. I was pleasantly surprised by how moisturizing the mask was, as well. It left my skin soft and smooth, which was quite nice C: I have no real complaints about the mask beyond the smell, which wasn't even that bad to me. It's a really good mask that does what it advertises, and does it well. I would definitely re-buy it!

Conclusion: Final Score: 4.5/5

Pros:
  • reduced redness
  • significantly brightened skin
  • made skin glow
  • moisturizing and smoothing
Cons:
  • kind of weird cologne smell

  9. I tried one of these, and it seemed like it was good, but because arbutin needs time to work, I can only guess that the mask works much better long term than one use. ^_^ This makes me want to buy a box myself!
